Artist Statement
My earlier work was derived from direct observation, but memory association plays a large part as well in the image making.
I am aware, too, of the changes happening in space about me. Closeness, erosion, weathering, growth, sometimes decay, forming the image… making an experience away from the original presence… hopefully with color, texture and perhaps some lyric value.
Biography
Hamish MacEwan is an internationally exhibited artist born in Scotland. In 1949, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Edinburgh College of Art, School of Drawing and Painting. He went on to study at the Moray House College of Education at Edinburgh University and the Fogg Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the late 1950s, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Fine Arts Education from Harvard University.
MacEwan has held professional positions with the Boston Museum of Fine Art, taught at the University of Iowa and the University of New Hampshire. He has also acted as the head of the Art Department at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, FL, where he resides.
In addition to his artwork, MacEwan produces cultural programs for the local PBS station and participates in a Scottish community organization, the St. Andrews Society of Jacksonville.
